What’s Needed to Get Speech and Language Therapy Jobs

In the UK, the minimum you will need to apply for speech and language therapy jobs is finishing a three or four year degree or honours degree course. A number of universities in the UK provide this comprehensive training. This training provides clinical experience as well so students can develop  skills by working under supervision with different of patients.  The requirements for entry vary among the different universities.

Speech and language therapy jobs involve assessing and treating different types of speech, language and communication problems in people of all ages. The job may involve working with people who have eating and swallowing problems, people who stutter, people who have had a stroke or people with a learning disability.

Many speech and language therapy jobs offered in the UK require some some experience. Employers may specify the only want candidates that have previous experience working with children or a Speech Therapist with Dysphagia training.  Work is offered at hospitals, community health centres, special schools, day centres, and in clients homes so therapists need to be flexible.  Many new speech and language therapists work with both adults and children at first before specializing in a specific type of speech and language therapy. Teaching or management jobs are the next step up the career ladder although many therapists prefer working directly with clients.
