New Dads 101- Bathing Baby
Being a new parent is a wonderful experience. First time parents bring this tiny baby home and often find themselves in a panic, unsure of what to do. Reading every parenting book on the shelf cannot prepare parents for the events that unfold in those first few weeks at home.
One of the major milestones in those first few days is the first bath. Most often the first few baths will just involve a sponge and some warm water to avoid too much interaction with the umbilical cord. Newborn babies really do not need soap as it can dry out the fragile skin.
If parents want to use soap, a chemical and fragrance-free baby soap is the best choice to minimize potential skin reactions. For the sponge bath, lay the baby on a towel keeping them partly covered to avoid getting cold. Simply wet the sponge or cloth with warm water and gently rub the skin. Be sure to get in the folds of skin, such as legs, armpit and neck, as this is where infections can occur. Dry baby off as you go so they won’t catch a chill from being too wet. Washing the hair is not necessary at this point so treat the head the same as the rest of the body.
Once the umbilical cord has fallen off, baby can be submerged in a tub. Old fashioned baby baths were done in the kitchen sink and many families still do once the baby is old enough to sit up. For babies who are sill laying, a small tub can be purchased for Bathing Baby or the main bathtub with a shallow amount of water works fine. Once the baby is a bit older, soap can be used more frequently. Babies don’t need to be bathed every day until they start really getting outside and getting dirty.
Keeping your baby clean is important for their health and safety. It can be a bit unsettling, but after a few tries you fall into a groove. As with anything else that happens with new parents, bathing your new baby becomes second nature.
